Project Overview

We developed a comprehensive drought monitoring system for a national agricultural agency to provide timely information on drought conditions and support decision-making for agricultural planning and water resource management.

Challenge

The client needed a reliable system to monitor drought conditions across a large and diverse agricultural region. Traditional ground-based monitoring was insufficient due to limited coverage and delays in data collection and reporting.

Solution

We designed and implemented a satellite-based drought monitoring system that integrates multiple data sources:

• Satellite-derived vegetation indices (NDVI, EVI) from Sentinel-2 and MODIS
• Soil moisture data from Sentinel-1 and SMAP
• Precipitation data from satellite and ground stations
• Temperature and evapotranspiration estimates
• Historical climate data for anomaly detection

The system includes:

• Automated data processing pipeline for near-real-time updates
• Machine learning algorithms for drought classification and prediction
• Interactive web dashboard for visualization and analysis
• Early warning system with automated alerts
• Mobile app for field data collection and verification
